Sociologists refer to this as the feminization of poverty, where two out of every three poor adults are women. This then also affects children, which makes the dire situation even worse. There are six million more women than men in the world. Women perform 66% of the world’s work, but receive only 11% of the world’s income, and own only 1% of the world’s land. They account for 55% of all college students, but even when women have equal years of education it does not translate into economic opportunities or political power.
Many women’s issues such as cultural, political, health, economics, and poverty is steadily mounting. Poverty in India is rampant, with the nation likely to have a third of the world’s poor. According to 2010 data from the United Nations Development Programme, an estimated 37.2% of Indians live below the country’s national poverty line. Women are increasingly the ones who suffer the most poverty. When the basic health care infrastructure is lacking, the poorest citizens suffer the most.
